Narligol Crater Lake
My Cappadocia Trip

It would be correct to say that the continuation of Ihlara Valley for Narlıgöl.

Narligol, which is an important place in Niğde with its natural beauty, is the only crater lake of the entire Cappadocia region, although it is said that it may have been formed by the fall of the meteor.

The craters are formed by the movement of the volcanoes, the lava flows out and accumulates in the pits formed in the magmas.

The craters, which are filled with rain and snow waters over time, also form lakes.

Here, Nar Lake is one of the Cappadocia lakes that are included in this definition. Narligol, which is waiting to be discovered like a paradise hidden near Ihlara Valley, is cold and sweet, although it is of volcanic origin and contains sulfur.

There are even reeds and fish in it. This must have been the reason why the name "Bitter Lake" changed in ancient times.

Narligol Crater Lake

The depth of the lake, which covers an area of about three thousand square meters and has an altitude of 1371 meters, reaches 70 - 80 meters.

Surrounded by high mountains, this natural wonder remains in the pit, never catching snow and freezing frosts. While Cappadocia winters are cold, Narlıgol spends the winter with a completely mild climate.

One of the features that make the lake interesting is that it looks like a heart when viewed from above. This interesting shape, which you cannot understand while standing on the shore, has been discovered with the attention of photographers.

When the demand for the lake increased, a road was built on the hill that climbed from Aksaray direction. You can see the shape of the lake exactly when you climb this viewing hill and watch it from the balloon in the sky. One of Cappadocia's most album photographs, which is a great backdrop for photographers, is the lake and its surroundings.

In the area where the lake is located, there are fairy chimneys and underground cities along the valley stretching east-west of Narkoy. The reason why the underground city is publicly visible and looks almost like an aboveground city is that it reveals the residential area where the hard slope on which it was carved collapses and hides over time.

While some of the fairy chimneys are 2 or 3 floors, some of them can rise up to 5 floors. The churches with a crucifix plan carved into them belong to the Late Byzantine Period and were found in the A.D. It is dated to the 10th and 12th centuries.

One of the 5-storey churches in the valley is distinguished by frescoes on the ground floor. Although these frescoes, which are made with great care, have been destroyed until today, they stand out with the depictions of saints, saints and Christ.
